A pump is used to apply high pressure, causing water molecules from the feedwater to permeate through the semi-permeable membrane to the other side. This results in purified water. The dissolved and undissolved inorganic salts, heavy metal ions, organic substances, bacteria, colloids, and other substances in the feedwater cannot pass through the semi-permeable membrane and are discharged with the concentrate.

The reverse osmosis membrane has a pore size of 0.0001 micrometers, which is significantly smaller than the pore size of a typical PP cotton filter cartridge at 5 micrometers or an ultrafiltration membrane at 0.01 micrometers.
